Movie Ratings | Pi, 6 Below, Emperor, Bibaho Diaries, Byomesh Pawrbo

Time for some quick movie reviews. Picked up a good stock from the local library and trying to finish those gradually. Here are few which I saw during the last week or so.

Pi (1998)- This one is a psychological thriller based on a eccentric insomniac mathematician living in a New York City apartment pursuing the search for a magic number which can help him unearth a stock market pattern. In the journey he gets exploited by some religious groups, trading cartels etc. all of whom wanted to get hold of the number for unlawful gains.

This movie was the debut movie of the director Darren Aronofsky and the lead role was portrayed by Sean Guellete. The movie is shot in high contrast black-white which adds to it's psychedelic effect.
The movie  was a successful  one but it didn't appeal appeal to me much as a thriller. To me it lacked the thrill factor and concentrated more on the psychological distortions of the protagonist.

My Rating would be 2.5 out of 5.

6 Below - This 2017 film belongs to the same genre of survival saga as the 2010 movie 126 Hours. This movie is also based on the true story of a professional ice hockey player Eric Le Marque.

It showed how a talented player got himself destroyed by taking to drugs and had extreme disregard for what opportunities life had provided him. However life taught him a tough lesson when he got stranded while skiing in the High Sierras under extreme weather conditions. The movie is around his survival in those harsh conditions.

Eric Le Marque is called The Miracle Man and is portrayed by Josh Hartner in the movie.
A good watch which may not have achieved great success as there were earlier movies made based on the same theme.

My Rating would be 3 out of 5.

Emperor - This is based on the Allied occupation of Japan following it's surrender and the subsequent investigation which was carried on by General Fellers, on behalf of General MacArthur, for bringing to trial the Japanese leaders responsible for war crimes before the TokyoTribunal.

The movie provides an insight into the minds of the Japanese soldier and how they were able to achieve such major military success in the period preceding the end of the war. Matthew Fox, who played General Fellers, gave a strong performance which emphasized the role to he played  in a exonerating Emperor Hirohito and thus saving Japan from further degradation and decay following the end of war. Tommy Lee Jones played the other important role of General MacArthur in this 2012 film.

I am a fan of war epics and this was good one at that. The only deterrent was the romantic association of General Fellers which ran as a sub-plot. I am not sure if that is fictional or not; if it's fictional then it was an un-required one.

My Rating would be 3.5 out of 5.

Apart from the above three, two Bengali movies also done on Hotstar. One was Bibaho Diaries (2017)  by Mainak Bhowmik and the other one was Byomkesh Pawrbo (2016) by Arindom Sil.

Bibaho Diaries is a romantic comedy on a young couple who started their marital life following a short romantic period. Ritwick and Sohini play the make and female leads in the film. The story line charts the familiar course of romance, pre-wedding blues followed by initial bliss of married life, then some misunderstandings almost leading to a break-up and finally a happy reunion again.
However it is the fun element punched in between which makes it a good watch.

Byomkesh Pawrbo is based on the story Amriter Mrityu. Here also we have Ritwick and Sohini in supporting roles as Ajit and Satyavati. However the lead character is ably portrayed by Abir. Abir has undoubtedly turned out to be the best bet to play two of iconic characters in Bengali; Byomkesh and Feluda. No one has looked more convincing as Byomkesh since Rajat Kapur in the small screen version which used to be telecast on Doordarshan.

My Rating for these two movies is 3 out of 5.
