Movie Ratings | A Hologram for the King, The Manhattan Project, Contagion, October, Sacred Games

A Hologram for the King :Tom Hanks plays the lead role in this 2016 movie which is around the story of a sales executive from a US based technology company who lands up in Saudi Arabia to secure an IT deal. It's about the challenges he faces in this new country which is vastly different from his homeland. Added to that are the downs in his own personal life where he is going through a divorce.
However with time he gets accustomed to the new country, makes friends and even makes it his new home. Other lead characters in the movie are played by Sarita Choudhury and Alexander Black.
Overall a nice watch but fails to.meet the expectations set by a Tom Hanks movie.

My Rating: 3 out of 5

The Manhattan Project:This is a 1986 movie is about an adolescent who manages to sneak a good amount of highly enriched plutonium from a government facility and builds a nuclear bomb at home. The lead roles are played by Christopher Collet as the teen age school boy and John Lithgow as the nuclear scientist at the government facility. Considering the movie was made more than 30 years back, it is still an engaging watch. Wikipedia mentions that the movie is loosely based on John Aristotle Philips.

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Contagion:With a star studded line up of Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne (of Matrix fame)...this movie promised a lot and started with a bang as well but ended with a whimper. The plot is set around the outbreak of a deadly virus from Hong Kong; a virus which was contagious and was spreading exponentially.
The plot opened up in a grand manner and exploded beyond control. The writer missed to place a concievable boundary on the story line. The curtains on such a global pandemic was pulled down abruptly. The presence of many high profile actors was not justified.

My Rating: 2.5 out of 5

October:It is always a welcome change when a commercial actor moves out of his comfort zone and takes up challenging characters to portray. We have seen many veteran actors achieve that with distinction and Varun Dhawan is definitely a member of that list with powerful portrayals in Badlapur and now in October. A powerful movie with some good performance from a lesser know Banita Sandhu and Varun Dhawan. The plot is around the unconditional love of a young man for a girl who was paralysed because of an accident.
A well made movie from Soojit Sircar which hits the right chord even with a negative ending. Wonderful and endearing watch indeed.

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Sacred Games:This is the first Netflix series completely produced in India, Season 1 of which 8 episodes was recently released. The lead actors are Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte. An engrossing watch with a closely knit plot created in the lines of '24' another TV series by Anil Kapoor. Quite an engrossing watch.

My Rating for Season 1 is 3.5 out of 5
